Zanzibar Spice Tour & Jozani Forest

Discover the secrets of Zanzibar’s famous spice industry at the Hill Kidichi Spice Farm, and learn about different spices and their uses in the local cuisine.
Venture into the lush Jozani Forest to encounter the rare and playful Red Colobus Monkeys, which are said to be the world’s rare species, endemic and endangered.

The famous Zanzibar Spice Tour introduces you to most of Zanzibar’s spices and fruits, (depending on the season) and if you are lucky, a few historical sites too.

A full-day guided tour that starts at Kibweni Palace through to Kidichi will give you the view of small traditional farms and the Kizimbani spice plantation that grow cloves, vanilla, nutmeg, cardamom and other spices as well as medicinal and ornamental plants and tropical fruits.

It’s a rare experience and leaves you in no doubt why the islands are referred to as the “Spice Islands”. You will then proceed to a pristine location for a traditional swahili lunch.

After lunch you visit Jozani, a conservation area where you see the rare Zanzibar red colobus monkeys. It is the only remaining natural forest on Unguja Island which along with Pemba makes up the islands of Zanzibar.

To have a complete tour of the forest you visit all the three sections – Red colobus monkeys, Forest and the Mangroves plants.

This forest hosts Zanzibar’s first and only National Park lying in a fossil coral bed between the mangrove filled bays of Chwaka and Uzi. The seasonal flooding and a high water table gives rise to a unique groundwater forest.

On the high ground to either side is dry coral rag forest and thicket with mangrove forests and salt marshes to the north of the National park, the area is an extremely rich mosaic of Zanzibar’s diverse natural habitats, a haven and home for wildlife.
