Day Trip to the Equator & Thompson Falls

Kenya is one among the 13 countries in the globe where the Equator line crosses through, and Nanyuki is one of towns that benefits from this unique location.

This geographical landmark is where the Northern and Southern Hemispheres meet, providing an incredible opportunity to experience the wonders of our planet. You can stand on the equatorial line, where the fascinating phenomena occurs, such as the Coriolis effect, which causes water to swirl differently in each hemisphere. The locals offer engaging explanations and demonstrations, making the experience both educational and entertaining.
Visit the Thompson’s Falls, a scenic waterfall located in Nyahururu, Kenya. The falls are named after Joseph Thomson, a Scottish geologist and naturalist who first discovered them in 1883. The waterfall is approximately 74 meters (243 feet) high and is located in the Ewaso Narok River, which originates from the Aberdare Range.
Experience this unique phenomena  and sceneries where culture and geography meet for an unforgettable adventure.

Pick up from the airport or your Nairobi accommodation at 0700hrs.

Depart for a demonstration at the Equator line. You will drive through Thika Super highway with breathtaking views of the pineapple country side of Thika. The three hour drive gets you where the Northern Hemisphere & Southern Hemisphere begin. Here a fascinating phenomenon known as the Coriolis effect occurs. If you are standing to the south of the equator line on the southern hemisphere, the water tends to move in an anti-clockwise manner. If you stand to the north, you will notice the water moving in a clockwise direction. If, on the other hand, you are standing at the equator itself, the water shows no movement. The locals here are always eager to set up this experiment for you. If you want, you could even get a certificate of proof of being at the Equator at a negotiable fee. After the demonstration you will descend towards Nyahururu town.

Visit the scenic Thomson’s falls, which is 243 feet high (74 Meters) along the Ewaso Nyiro river which drains from the Aberdare mountain ranges.

You can see the falls from the top at their view point, but with an adventurous spirit you may take a walk following the trail towards the bottom of a ravine for a closer look. The water from the falls makes the best hippopotamus swimming pools in Kenya. After the tour at the falls you may break for lunch at place of your choice; Thompson Falls Lodge or Panari Resort. Lunch is paid directly by self, depending on menu.

You thereafter visit the nearby hippo pools for a closer view of these large mammals before embarking on your trip back to Nairobi.
